By Bira Sulawesi Editorial Desk
Bira Sulawesi usually means Tanjung Bira, the coast of Bira village in Bonto Bahari district, Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi. Travellers come for white sand, reef diving and the pinisi boatyards nearby. Indonesia's national tourism site puts it about 200 km overland from Makassar, a trip of roughly five to six hours.
Where is Bira Sulawesi on the map, and what is it?
Indonesian Wikipedia places it in Bonto Bahari district of Bulukumba Regency, and the village coast is the destination known as Tanjung Bira. Listings that say Bira South Sulawesi or Bira Bulukumba point to this cape; plain Bira Indonesia can mislead, because other places in the country share the name. If you want a pin for a Bira Sulawesi map, the same page gives the village centre as 5°35′01″S 120°27′21″E. That pin marks the village, not the tip of the cape or any one beach, so check the exact place name again when you plan a specific stop.
This page is the short version of our Bira Sulawesi travel guide, and the table sends you to a longer page for each decision.

What draws travellers to Bira?
Published accounts return to the same draws. The first is the beach: the national tourism site describes very fine white sand and relatively calm waves at Tanjung Bira Beach. That wording is general and says nothing about supervision or currents, which the safety page in the table above covers.
The second is the reef. A report by Indo Ocean Foundation with Indo Ocean Project compiles 2022 to 2023 data from 13 dive sites around Tanjung Bira, Liukang Loe and Kambing Island. Its publisher is linked to dive training in Bira, so read it with that connection in mind.
The third is boatbuilding, covered below. Lodging runs, in the tourism site's words, from casual homestays to luxury resorts with sea-cliff views.
How do you reach Bira from Makassar?
By road. Makassar is the gateway, and the published drive times do not agree. The tourism site says about 200 km and five to six hours. Detik reports the same distance in only three to four hours. Our road page sets those figures side by side and explains why the slower one is the safer number for planning, while the bus guide covers public transport from Mallengkeri terminal. The price table on this page shows one published figure for a private car with driver, as its source states it, so follow the source link before you rely on it.
What can you do once you are there?
The tourism site lists snorkelling, diving, banana boats and the crossing to Liukang Loe as activities at the beach. Antara reported that the regency tourism head named Tanjung Bira, Apparalang, Panrang Luhu, Liukang Loe, Puncak Pua Janggo and Samboang among seven leading destinations in Bulukumba. That is an official promotional list, and it tells you what the regency wants seen, not how good each place is.
- On the water: a boat to Liukang Loe, snorkelling or diving.
- On land: the Apparalang cliffs, Titik Nol and Pua Janggo hill, all of which need some form of transport or a good walk.
- On a quieter day: the east-facing shore at Panrang Luhu, or a boatyard visit.
- Under a roof: the Museum Tenun Bira, which Bulukumba Regency and Institut Teknologi Bandung opened in Bira village on 25 October 2026 to document the local hand-woven cloth.
The full sorted list, with a source for each item, is in things to do in Bira.
Is Bira Sulawesi worth the long drive?
Travellers who went disagree, and the split follows what they came for. The authors of the Let's Explore blog spent a week on the east coast and enjoyed it as a slow base for laptop work, yet they advise limiting a stay to one or two days if you want things to do. The author of Round the World in 30 Days, who stayed at Bara Beach in 2014, wished for more days there. A dive-master trainee writing on Medium puts diving first among the reasons to come. Expedia, which sells rooms there, suggests two to three days.
Set those opinions against the road: about 200 km each way, which uses up most of two days. If your Sulawesi schedule is short and you want a full programme, that is a large share of the trip. If you want sand, a reef day and a boatyard morning, two nights is the minimum, and our Tanjung Bira itinerary sets out the options by length.
When should you go?
The tourism site calls April to October the ideal dry-season window. Other sources disagree. Weather Spark, modelling Bulukumba town, shows January as the rainiest month, while the agency site Sulawesi.com names May for Bira. Wind matters here as much as rain does, because it decides whether small boats go out. Before you fix dates around a dive or an island crossing, read the month-by-month page, which puts those conflicting sources next to each other.
Why are the boatyards part of the story?
Bulukumba is one of the places where pinisi are still built. UNESCO, which uses the word for the rig and sail of the Sulawesi schooner, inscribed "Pinisi, art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi" on its Representative List of intangible heritage in 2017 and names Tana Beru, Bira and Batu Licin, the last of them in Kalimantan, as centres of the craft. The listing covers a craft, not a place. It does not make Bira or Tana Beru a World Heritage Site, whatever a tour brochure may imply.
The national tourism site says visits should follow local rules and permission, so go as a guest at someone's workplace. A resort guide puts Tana Beru 20 to 30 minutes from Bira by road. Our Tana Beru boatyards page explains how to do that without getting in the way, and the Festival Pinisi page covers the launch rituals and how the dates move from year to year.
How busy is Bira?
Far busier with Indonesians than with foreigners. Bira zone management's 2024 counts, reported by Antara, work out at close to 200 domestic or local visitors for every foreign one, and the Bira Beach page gives the figures.
Those yearly totals hide peaks. One long weekend in September 2024 drew about three times the visitors of the three days a week earlier, by the Bulukumba tourism office's count, and that says nothing about other seasons. Check the Indonesian holiday calendar before you choose your dates.
Who is behind this guide?
Bira Sulawesi is a specialist travel guide under Juara Holding Group, with a request desk. It is not a resort, dive centre, tour operator, airline or government body, and it does not own or run boats or rooms. We earn when a request through the desk becomes a paid booking, so read our advice with that interest in mind. Where a claim comes from a resort or an agency that sells something here, we name it so that you can weigh it. More detail is on the about page and in the disclaimer.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party rates and official notices, each with its source and the month we checked it. Sources disagree, some figures are old, and rates change, so check the source before you rely on a figure. These are not our offers.
